MARGAO
Margao Municipal Chairperson Lyndon Pereira descended in the Municipal New market early Tuesday for a first hand experience of the extent of illegal and unauthorised vendors making brisk business around the market when the main market remains shut as per the lockdown order.
With complaints galore that illegal vendors make hay outside the Municipal market, the MMC chairperson made his presence felt in the market in shorts.
Many a vendor, including vendors selling mangoes and fruits did not initially recognise the Municipal chairperson when he questioned them over their business activities.
In fact, he went unnoticed for quite some time, giving him an opportunity to study the extent of the illegal and unauthorised activities outside the New market.
He later told the media that he would discuss the issue with the police and the Chief Officer how to go about in stopping the activity.
The MMC chairperson’s presence in the market comes a day after the New market traders led by President Vinod Shirodkar demanded an immediate stop to the illegal activity outside the New market.
Having seen for himself the extent of the problem, the traders now hope that the civic body will crack a whip against the illegal vendors.
