CANACONA
New observations in a study conducted post-cyclone Tauktae have brought to light the precarious condition of the pristine Galgibaga beach in Canacona with experts calling for mitigation measures to save houses and people.
Stating that the Beach had been battered by Tauktae, environmentalists and experts have called for the protection of the beach as it could pose serious danger to people living on the banks of the Galgibaga River.
A team from Shree Mallikarjun College, Canacona, comprising Vice Principal and Professor Dr F M Nadaf, Assistant Professor Venkatesh Prabhugaonkar, Vivek Kapale and Amol Kamat recently visited Galgibaga to inspect the beach.
According to the observation of the team, the beach had been protected by a sandbar for about almost 500 metres, which partially blocked the mouth of the Galgibaga river. Because of this sandbar, the river was forced to take a huge turn before joining the Arabian sea, it noted.
The team had earlier observed the impact of Cyclone Vayu in 2019, which had caused extensive sand erosion at Palolem, Rajbag and Galgibaga beaches.
Dr Nadaf said he had been repeatedly addressing the issue of Galgibaga beach erosion for the past two decades.
