After a 25-member delegation  of South Goa Zilla Panchayats went on a study tour to the picturesque  Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Margao Municipal City Fathers and  officials are bracing up to head to Mount Abu, but for a different  reason.

Around 20 councillors headed by Chairperson Pooja Naik and as  many as five officials, including Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar and  Municipal engineers have confirmed their participation in the two-day  regional specialised training programme on “Development of green spaces  & parks under

Amrut”.

The specialised training is scheduled at  Mount Abu, Rajasthan on January 22-23 and the 25-member MMC delegation  is expected to fly to Ahmedabad, before heading to the hill station by road.

The specialised training programme is being organised by the  Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies of all India  Institute of Local Self-Government, Mumbai under the auspices of the  Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.

In the  past too, Margao Municipal councillors had headed to various destinations  on similar training programmes, to study solid waste management.

Sources  in the MMC informed that though around 25 persons, including 20  councillors and five municipal engineers have confirmed their  participation, the exact number of participants will be known only later  this week.

MMC officials informed that the key objective behind the  programme is to encourage urban local bodies and other stakeholders to  prioritise development of green spaces and parked and exploiting ideals  for the same.

The purpose of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban  Transformation (AMRUT) is to increase the amenity value of cities by  developing greenery and well maintained open spaces (parks). Saying that  these are the thrust areas of AMRUT mission, sources said there are  numerous health benefits associated with access to public open space

and  parks.
