MARGAO
Margao Municipal councillors from the opposition group on Wednesday lodged their protest over the delay in providing them men and machinery to carry out cleanliness in their wards in view of the ensuing Ganesh Chathurti.
BJP-backed Councilors, including Sadanand Naik and Babita Naik, Camilo Barretto, besides Councilors Ganashyam Shirodkar and Mahesh Amonkar called on the Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes and Municipal engineer Diniz D’Mello to complain that the system of sending civic workers and trucks have not benefited their wards till date.
Sadanand told the media that with Ganesh Chathurti round the corner, their wards need to be cleaned up, especially the public places, including the immersion sites. “The MMC workers and machinery have not reached the Housing Board area of the city till date. Thanks to Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, the area is getting cleaned up. But, that does not mean the MMC has the right to discriminate against the opposition represented wards”, he said.
Camilo Barretto also echoed similar sentiments. He said the MMC workers are not being provided to the opposition ruled wards and urged the Chief Officer to send the workers uniformly to all the wards.
Chairperson Lyndon Periera and deputy Deepali Sawal and other councillors also were present during the discussions.
Chief Officer Agnelo later said that the municipal workers and trucks are meant to clean up only public places and not for any private use. “We have deployed our workers to clean up the public areas in view of the ensuing Ganesh festivities”, he said, adding that he would not allow any misuse of the official machinery for private use.
