Municipal bodies across the State have been directed by the Director  of Municipal Administration (DMA) to crack a whip against roadside  vendors in the wake of the tragic death of a child at Ponda over a  month ago.

Following the directives, the Margao Municipal Council on  Thursday removed a mega fruit stall erected along the roadside just  outside the wholesale fish market, with Municipal workers effecting  seizure of fruits worth thousands of rupees.

Chief Officer  Siddivinayak Naik told The Goan that the Margao Municipal Council has  received a correspondence from the DMA directing the civic bodies to crack  a whip against roadside vendors in the wake of the death of a child at  Ponda. “The directions by the DMA, a copy of which has been sent to the  Traffic police, has mandated the civic bodies to clear all roadside  hawkers, creating nuisance for public transport,” he said.

Naik said  the objective behind the directive is to ensure that public avoid buying  goods from roadside hawkers and vendors.
