MMC cracks whip on unauthorised shops open in Margao New Market

MARGAO
As the Margao Municipal New Market came under the scanner of the South Goa district Collector, the Margao Municipality on Tuesday cracked a whip against shops and establishments which were found open in the market under the pretext of selling rain wear and protection items.

Margao Municipal Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes also cautioned the President of New Market Traders Association that the district authorities may take a serious view in case of continuation of alleged violation of the Collector’s restrictions.

The MMC officials cracked a whip with the help of police after the Chief Officer reportedly received a couple of photographs from South Goa district Collector, Ruchika Katyal, IAS with a request to check the violations, if any in the new market.

“Our team of officials verified the photographs and got the erring shops and establishments shut down after they were operating under the pretext of selling plastic items. This should stop immediately as the Collector’s order has only given relaxation to shops selling groceries, eatables and those selling rain protection items,” he said.

Complaints have been pouring in from many quarters stating that some of the shops, which were basically dealing in readymade garments, were also open under the guise of selling plastic and rain wear items.

The Chief Officer said he has left strict instructions to the market inspectors to go strictly by the district Collector’s order by not allowing any shops open except those specified in the order.
