MARGAO
Is the Margao Municipal Council garden clean and green or has the iconic garden become a yard for dumping of scrap and parking of vehicles?
Indeed, while it is a fact that the Municipal garden has become a safe heaven for anti-social activity, including drug trafficking, dumping of waste, including scrap items and vehicular parking has thrown up many a question for the 25 City Fathers to answer.
While the promised face-lift, including painting of the benches around the garden has not taken place till date, the garden has become an eyesore with the dumping of scrap items and vehicular parking right under the nose of the City Fathers and the Municipal babus.
Given that nothing has been heard from the civic body on the restoration of the iconic garden to its pristine glory, a city-based NGO Guild of Active Members for Action and Review has served the civic body a 15-day deadline to initiate necessary steps to restore the garden or face action.
R Pinto said the organisation along with the residents has asked the civic body to initiate necessary action and save, protect the garden from being misused and issue necessary direction to the officials to ensure that no municipal vehicles are permitted to enter and parked inside and also remove all the scrap and goods dumped in the garden.
“The northern side of the garden, which is facing the Margao post office has been restored and maintained by protecting its ancient glory, thanks to our dynamic MLA Digambar Kamat, for taking a bold decision and initiative to hand over the development and maintenance of this part of the garden to the Forest department. The Forest department has indeed done a wonderful and marvelous job by restoring and maintaining the garden and preserving its ancient glory,” Pinto added.
