With mounds of dry waste staring at the civic body over the last two months, the Margao Municipal Council on Monday set up its third plastic baling machine behind the municipal building at the old fish market area.
The baling machine is expected to bale around 3.5-4 tonnes of dry waste depending on the number of hours the machine is operated, even as MMC chairperson Pooja Naik informed that the fourth baling machine will soon come up at the Margao industrial Estate.
She further said that the MMC has proposed to set up six more baling machines across the city as part of the plan to decentralize the process instead of concentrating the exercise at one place.
The MMC chairperson inaugurated the baling machine in the presence of her deputy Tito Cardozo, Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar and municipal employees at the old fish market.
Pooja said the new machine as well as the one proposed in Margao Industrial estate will help tide over the problem of mounting dry waste in the city.
“The Municipality has been allotted a shed in the Margao Industrial estate and it will help to tide over the plastic waste once the fourth baling machine is installed there,” Pooja said, adding that the MMC has proposed to procure another six balling machines in the near future.
The two baling machines presently in operation at Sonsodo have failed to meet the growing requirements with the ongoing waste segregation churning up around 15 tonnes of plastic waste every day.
In fact, with just two baling machines operating at Sonsodo, tonnes of the plastic dry waste, stacked in gunny bags is lying dumped in the open space at the dump.
