The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) continues to assert it has no role to play in lifting away the waste along the Comba-Old market ring road and the Margao Municipal Council is dragging its feet to deploy its army of workers in clearing the road from the waste.
The Goan had highlighted the issue, but, sadly, neither the Margao Municipal Council nor the GWMC Corporation has taken any steps to deal with it.
While GWMC Managing Director, Levinson Martins, has said the Corporation has no role to play in the matter, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes and his team of engineers and sanitary inspectors are maintaining a stoic silence.
Questions are being raised whether the Margao and Fatorda MLAs have shown urgency in attending to the issue head on since the Comba-Old market stretch of the ring road falls in a no man’s land, where hardly any people reside.
Technically, the ring road passes through both Fatorda and Margao areas of the Margao Municipal Council, but has no inhabitants residing along the stretch. The road has become a garbage dumping site given that it is an isolated stretch and lacks illumination.
Incidentally, the Margao Municipal Council has engaged the services of two agencies to collect waste door-to-door. They are mandated not just to collect the daily waste door-to-door, but also ensure they clean up the surroundings. “Why can’t the Margao Municipal Council draft the 100 workers of the agencies to lift away the dry waste along the ring road? The MMC can also easily deploy its army of workers for the work,” maintained an official, who also fears the dry and plastic waste dumped all along the ring road stretch may find its way into the river Sal.
