In a bid to get rid of the dark spots across the commercial capital, the Margao Municipal Council is toying with the idea of bringing them under the watch of Closed Circuit TV (CCCTV) surveillance cameras.
Speaking on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti programme organised by the Holy Spirit Institute, Margao on the theme “Clean Goa is my dream” on Friday, the Margao Municipal Chairperson said the waste treatment projects proposed by the civic body will help control the waste menace and also keep Margao and Fatorda clean. “The city is facing the problem of dark spots across the city. Even educated people prefer to dump the waste at these dark spots instead of handing over the waste to the collectors. By dusk, waste from the neighbournig areas find its way into the city at these dark spots, further aggravating the waste disposal problem”, he said.
The Chairperson added. “To tide over the problem of dark spots, I have discussed with our councillors to go for CCTV surveillance cameras in tracking down the unscrupulous elements dumping waste in the open areas. Once these cameras are installed at certain locations, it will help keep the city clean”, he added.
The chairperson also announced a slew of measures set in motion to resolve the waste imbroglio facing the commercial capital. “We have invited the Expression of Interest to set up two 25TPD bio-methanation plants. Work on the 5TPD bio-methanation plant proposed at the SGPDA market is presently underway”, he said, adding that the waste problem will be addressed once these plants take concrete shape.
The Chairperson also pointed out that the Civic body has floated the multi-level parking project, adding that the burning issue of parking will be resolved in the city once the facility takes shape.
Old market ward Councilor Vitorino Tavares reiterated his commitment to keep the ward clean and green, while seeking support of all concerned to make the city clean and green.
Holy Spirit Parish Priest Fr Amandio Valladares reminded that Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, wanted India to be clean and green. “Mahatma Gandhi was not a politician, but a man who truly loved India. He had a vision for India, including the vision to make India clean and green”, he said.
While offering the cooperation of the Holy Spirit Church and the school in the efforts to keep the city clean, Fr Valladares all the stakeholders should come together to ensure that the state and the country remains clean and green.
