The Margao Municipal Council apparently looks forward for the visit of Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) Dr Tariq Thomas to the city on Friday to help the civic body tide over the burning solid waste management imbroglio plaguing Margao post-Sonsodo fire incident.
With Fomento having served the notice for the termination of the Concession agreement and the company’s threat not to accept mixed waste at Sonsodo, the Margao civic body hopes that the DMA’s visit to the city will help overcome a host of issues concerning waste management.
Sources said the DMA may visit the wholesale fish market and later at the mega SGPDA retail market to explore the possibility of setting up a mini unit for the treatment of fish, meat and vegetable waste generated in these markets. The idea of setting up a mini unit to treat the market waste has been floated in civic circles to lessen the burning issue at the waste treatment plant at Sonsodo. The municipality, however, is banking on the DMA’s nod to take the idea forward.
The Margao Municipal Council is also expected to seek sanction from the DMA to engage additional 100 labourers on the solid waste management project, with a proposal to deploy around 20-30 labourers for waste segregation at the waste treatment plant. Given that waste segregation at source has alluded the civic body till date, an idea is doing the rounds in the corridors of the civic body that deployment of daily labourers at the waste treatment plant may help in the segregation of waste before the same goes for treatment.
The municipality is also expected to draw attention of the DMA to the problem being faced by the civic body to dispose of the debris and waste collected from the drains during the desilting work in the wake of the High Powered Coordination Committee’s decision barring dumping of debris at the Sonsodo site.
The supply of logistics, including separate bins for waste segregation to the city households and other related infrastructure, which was promised by the DMA’s office in the past, but has not materialised till date, is also expected to come up for discussions with the DMA during the visit.
“We all look forward for
the visit of DMA Dr Tariq Thomas to guide the civic body in overcoming a host of issues concerning solid waste management,” MMC chairperson said.
MMC struggling to get contractor to cover Sonsodo dump
MARGAO: Even as a debate of sorts, whether to cover the Sonsodo dump yard with tarpaulin or not, is underway in the corridors of the civic body post-fire incident, the Margao Municipal Council is faced with another problem “ to scout for contractors to cover the site.
For, the civic officials have realised, for the second time in less than a week, that contractors have shied away from placing bids for the e-tender amounting to around Rs 19 lakh. When the e-tender was opened on Thursday for the second time, after the first attempt went abegging, Municipal officials found to their shock and surprise that not a single bidder applied for the tender.
Given the situation, the MMC is expected to draw the attention of the Director of Municipal Administration, Dr Tariq Thomas how to go about the situation. “If the DMA advises the Council not to cover the Sonsodo dump with tarpaulin post-fire incident as there’s a possibility of the tarpaulin catching fire, we will be saved of the ritual of again calling for the tender. Otherwise, the Municipality will have no option than to invite the bids for the third time,” informed a MMC engineer.
