The special meeting was specifically called to deliberate on the one-point agenda to regularize the list of daily wage employees, awaiting regularization for more than five years.
After the meeting, Chief Officer Y B Tawde told The Goan that the Council at Friday’s meeting has decided to place before the Director of Municipal Administration the question of regularization of the 80 daily municipal employees for an appropriate decision. “The list of 80 daily wage labourers was placed before the special meeting of the council on Friday. The list was approved and it will now be sent to the DMA for approval before a panel,” Tawde said.
The Council decision assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the notice served on the civic body by the Goa Municipal Employees Association to regularize the daily wage labourers or face direct action.
It has been the contention of the Association that the Council had in the past passed a resolution - No 4423, resolving to regulate the services of the daily-wage employees, who have completed five years of services and those employees appointed on compassionate grounds and who had completed two years of service.
In fact, the Association has held responsible the chairperson and the chief ofifcer of the Margao Municipal Council for violating and for continuing to violate the settlement dated May 8, 2014 signed by both the parties before the Asst Labour Commissioner and Conciliation officer, on June 16, 2015, thus denying regularization of services of the daily rated workers.
