MARGAO
However, the government still owes to the civic body whopping around Rs seven crore towards salary grant and octroi, informed sources in the Municipality.
While the Margao Municipal Council will certainly welcome and accept the government grant, though it falls short of its expectations, officials pointed out that timely disbursement of Octroi by the government would keep the civic body financial in a sound condition.
"Unlike in the past, the Margao municipality does not receive the Octroi on time. Though the Civic body has now received Rs 2.36 crore as Octroi, the government has to still clear Octroi pegged at Rs 2.36 crore," the official said.
Another area where the municipality expects the government to release grants on a timely basis is the salary grant.
"Timely disbursement of salary grant by the government will go a long way in enriching the Civic coffers and not force the body to resort to withdrawal of fixed deposits to pay the employees salaries," the official added.
Officials in the know pointed out that MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes erred in announcing at the Council meeting that the Civic body has received Rs 11 crore as Octroi from the government.
"At the recent Council meeting, the Chief Officer read out an order stating the government has allocated Rs 11 crore octroi for Margao. The Rs 11 crore octroi grant pertains to all the Municipal bodies in the state and not for Margao alone", an official clarified.
