the goan I networkrmargao rrMMC councillors have made it amply clear to the government authorities that the municipality is ready to extend its cooperation on the waste collection and disposal fronts at the SAG ground on condition that the agencies reimburse the amount of Rs 7.70 lakh due to the civic body. Following a high-level meeting of representatives of various agencies at the Nehru stadium last week, Director of Municipal Administration had dashed off a letter to the Margao civic body seeking help and cooperation to ensure the successful hosting of the U-17 World Cup at Fatorda. r Sources said the DMA had reportedly asked MMC to prepare the estimate towards the clean up of the SAG ground, besides lifting of garbage and waste generated both inside and outside the stadium on a daily basis, beginning from July 1 to September for around 100 days. The DMA has asked the municipality to make available a truck, five labourers, besides grass-cutting machines to maintain the SAG ground outside the stadium for a period of 100 days. r The issue figured at the meeting of the Margao Municipal Council on Wednesday wherein city fathers pointed out that the civic body can deploy its men and machinery for the clean-up operation on condition the government compensates the municipality monetarily. r Leading the pack was Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai, who made it clear that the government will have to foot the bill of the services provided by the civic body. “MMC is facing a serious shortage of men and machinery. We just can’t make available a truck and labourers to do a clean up of the SAG without paying for the services,” Babita maintained. rShe said the civic body is ready to provide the services even by outsourcing the work, provided the government compensates the municipality. Once beaten, twice shy, the city fathers seem to have taken a stand as they claimed that the SAG had in the past defaulted in clearing the garbage rcollection fees due to the civic body.
MMC refuses to play ball over collection of garbage in run up to fifa U-17 World Cup
Government agencies may have got down to the serious business of hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup matches at the Nehru stadium at Fatorda in October this year. However, the Margao Municipal Council appears set to play an altogether different ball game over the issue of lifting of garbage and overall cleanliness at the stadium for the next 100 days in the run up to the tournament. The matches in Goa will be played in the month of October.
