MARGAO

Faced with the bitter prospect of the door-to-door waste collection contractor quitting the job on January 15, threatening to paralyse waste collection in the Fatorda area of the city, the Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday moved in to persuade the contractor to give some more time to the civic body to put an alternate system in place.

MMC Chairperson Pooja Naik discussed the issue with Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar on Tuesday and it was decided to approach the contractor, with a plea to continue the ongoing exercise at least till January-end to give sufficient time to the civic body to look out for another contractor.

The contractor, who was entrusted with the job of collecting waste door-to-door, had already served a notice on the civic body on December 27 with a request to the Municipality to relieve him from the job from January 15.

However, given the bitter reality that the civic body has no wherewithal and machinery to take up the work of collecting waste door-to-door from the 11 Municipal wards in the Fatorda area of the city, the contractor has been approached to stay put for some time to put an alternate system in place.

Chairperson Pooja Naik told the media on Tuesday that the civic body has already moved the file with a plea to incumbent contractor to continue the ongoing operations at least till January-end. She pointed out that the municipality had no issues with the contractor, adding that the contractor had decided to quit the job on his own.

Conceding that door-to-door waste collection in the Fatorda area of the city will come to an abrupt halt if the contractor quits the job on January 15, the MMC chairperson has exuded confidence that the contractor would see reason and continue the operations for some time.

“We have full confidence that the contractor will not leave the civic body in the lurch by quitting the job from January 15,” she said, adding that the municipality will ensure that the contractor does not leave the work as per the notice.
