Overflowing bins, foul odour, flies and thrash welcomes citizens to the old South Goa Collectorate playing host to a number of government departments.
If the non-functioning lift had brought to the fore the problems faced by the citizens visiting the old Collectorate building, strange it may seem, but true that citizens cannot make entry into the building unless they cross past the overflowing bins and nuisance.
While the authorities have fixed the issue of the lift, the installation of the waste bin right at the entrance gate inside the building and the failure to clear the waste every day has added to the woes of the citizens.
When The Goan team visited the old Collectorate building on Tuesday, they were greeted by the overflowing bins right at the entrance, emitting foul odour. That the bins were not cleared for the last two days was apparent by the fact that while one of the two bins with the lid was full to the brim, the other one was overflowing.
Citizens cried foul over the situation, demanding to know how come a government building, which comes directly under the control of the district authorities,
is hit by apathy and indifference of the concerned authorities.
“This is totally unacceptable. The authorities should ensure that the daily waste collected in the bins is lifted away. Besides, the authorities should get the entrance cleaned and hygienic as thrash was found littered all around,” the citizen remarked.
Though it’s now over half a decade that the district Collectorate was shifted to the new imposing building near the KTC bus stand, the vacant space in the old Collectorate building has been allotted to accommodate the district Zilla Panchayat office, Department of Tribal Welfare, office of the Inspection of Civil Supplies, Department of Agriculture, election office housing the EVMs, office of the South Goa Administrator of Comunidades et al.
