Accelerating the process to kick start various revenue generating projects and decongestion of Mapusa market are some of the key achievements of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sandeep Falari who will be completing one year in office on November 5.
In an attempt to promote greener Mapusa, the decision to propose development of five gardens, which is one of the many firsts in the history of MMC, setting the ball rolling in introducing e-governance and taking some steps to rationalize traffic management in town were some other accomplishments of the council in its first term.
Almost 40 stalls on first floor opposite Canara Bank in the market are completed and will be auctioned soon. Similarly, another 57 stalls on first and second floor opposite taxi stand are also ready. MMC has also planned to develop the municipal garage into a commercial complex which will include shops and office at a cost of Rs 50 crore.
The council has also plans to develop the area housing Alankar theatre into a commercial project which will house a small theatre.
“The MMC has paid Rs 48 lakh to the government as infrastructure and assessment tax for development of the municipal garage. Once all licenses are procured, GSUDA will begin work on the project,” the chairperson informed.
He said all these projects would fetch substantial revenue to the civic body.
The council has taken series of steps in an attempt to decongest and introduce some discipline in Mapusa market.
It has recently passed a resolution to shift the intra-state (Mumbai) buses to the area near new bus-stand during important festivals like Chaturthi, Diwali and Christmas. It has also decided to relocate fireworks stalls opposite the taxi-stand from its earlier place in the heart of Mapusa. From next year, the 'matoli bazaar' which was creating chaos in the main market will be shifted to the taxi-stand.
“These are some of the crucial steps the council has taken to streamline the market and all these steps have been taken in the interest of the people,” the chairperson emphasized.
He said very soon some more areas in the market will be converted into pay parking to bring about traffic discipline in the market.
“The work on pay parking has already been tendered and very soon we will demarcate appropriate parking slots in the market,” he added.
He also said that three new gates have been recently installed in the market as per demands of the Mapusa merchants.
Five gardens were proposed by the council two of which at Angod near Alankar theatre and at Vidhyanagar, Khorlim were already tendered. The other three are proposed in Ganeshpuri, Karraswaddo and Cunchelim.
The council has also decided to demolish the dilapidated beef and pork stalls and reconstruct a new structure in its place. The estimate on the project has already been prepared and work on it will be taken on top priority, the chairperson disclosed.
Besides, the chairperson further informed that each ward will get Rs 25 lakh “ Rs 10 lakh from municipal funds and Rs 15 lakh from government grants “ for development of wards.
To manage traffic, the council along with the traffic department had decided to install traffic signals at key areas.
In the e-governance, the council has taken steps to start issuing spot billing for house tax payment, which will benefit the public and businessmen in particular.
“We have plans to introduce wifi in the municipal office and Mapusa market and to digitize documents as part of e-governance,” Falari said.
