The government has come under fire for permitting a telecom company to install a transmission tower very close to the Government High School in Kundaim.
The school’s Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and dozens of citizens from the vicinity have already written to the school authorities, the Directorate of Education and also the local panchayat to drop the plan.
“The site is very close to the school. The children belong to various age groups which are easily susceptible and it is universally established that there is dense radiation around the area where such towers are erected,” the PTA said in its petition.
Those opposing the installation of the tower have asked the government to follow the same principle it did to stop such work in other localities of Goa around schools.
“We advise the authorities, to politely withdraw from this anti-people development venture, else the villagers including ex-students and parents, will be forced to take measures including taking to the streets,” the petition said.
The petition, signed by over 190 villagers, ex-students and parents, demanding that the move to install the tower be dropped, was submitted to the education department back in August.
