Around eight or nine members of the 17-member Medium of Instruction (MoI) committee met on Monday to discuss the report prepared by committee head Dr Bhaskar Nayak. Those present at the meeting held at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) gave their suggestions and recommendations, and the report will be submitted to the government on January 24, said Dr Nayak.
The focus of the 20-page report will be on “quality education”, and a source said, that the report is likely to avoid the MoI issue. The committee was formed two and a half years ago, to do a survey of the state, and submit its findings so that the government could take a call on whether to fund English as the MoI for primary education in the state or not. But after convening several taluka-wise meetings with different stakeholders to ascertain their views on the MoI issue, the committee has been dodging its deadlines to submit the final report to the government. This is the first time the committee is meeting after the report was prepared, with several members staying absent because of ‘personal reasons’ said Dr Nayak.
The committee’s term had been extended in November 2016 and in March, July and October of 2017, with Dr Nayak saying last month that the report was delayed due to “personal reasons.”
