The Cyber Crime Cell of Goa Police has urged parents of minor children and teenagers to closely monitor their online activities as there have been incidents where objectionable pictures and videos shared among peers are being misused.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Cyber Police said they are closely monitoring instances where minor school and college-going girls share explicit photos and videos with their boyfriends during relationships. However, the males later exploit the content to threaten their exes post-breakup. "This has become a trend. Parents are urged to keep a close watch on their kids, and also their young girl child to ensure they do not share any such sensitive photographs," it said.
The advisory comes as the Cyber police cracked a Snapchat ID on Thursday by tracking and arresting one Sripad Naik who sexually harassed a college going girl.
The girl student, studying in a Panaji based college complained on Wednesday, that from June 2022 to January 31, 2024, a person with Snapchat ID Shripad and four other IDs developed friendship with her when she was a minor through the social media platform.
"When their friendship grew, he influenced the complainant to share her nude and objectionable photographs as well as videos. He then began to sexually harass her and threatened to circulate the content if she did not meet his illegal demand," the police said.
In December 2023, the Cyber Crime Cell had begun an inquiry into nine Instagram accounts belonging to minor girls from a prestigious school in Panaji, for allegedly posting manipulated videos of their schoolmate.
