Traditional fishermen continue to battle the rough seas and choppy waters as two more incidents of motorized canoes capsizing near the Benaulim coast have come to haunt the beleaguered fishermen on Saturday.
A group of fishermen assembled at the Benaulim beach on Saturday morning to rescue crew members of a motorized canoed that capsized close to the coast. Fishermen along with Dhristi rescue teams rescued the beleaguered fishermen, bringing them to shore.
The fishermen lent their helping hand to pull back the ill-fated canoe back to the shore and to salvage the fishing nets damaged in the incident.
Dhristi informed that the Benaulim coast witnessed multiple numbers of rescues on Saturday morning with all males rescued off the shore at Benaulim by team Drishti.
In the first rescue operation, four males, two from Ankola and as many crew from the state were out fishing, when the accident took place. Their canoe capsized about 50 meters from the shore.
“In a state of panic, all four males jumped into the water and the current began to drift them into the sea. Life saver, captain Pratap Naik and Sarvesh Gaonkar rushed to the scene with a jet ski and safely rescued one male. Life savers Gajesh Morje, Vikas Metha and Meghraj Juvatkar rescued the remaining three victims with the help of a rescue tube. The survivors were 49, 38 and 16 respectively”, Dhristisadi.

In the second incident, Dhristi undertook double rescue at Benaulim beach on Saturday.
Two males from Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand aged 35 and 18 years respectively were on a fishing boat at 7:45 am in the morning. The boat was carrying 12 people in all when it capsized off Benaulim beach. The two mentioned fishermen were rescued by life savers Meghraj Juvatkar and Vikas Mehta with the help of a rescue tube. The remaining 10 fishermen swam safely to shore.
This is the seventh incident this month where life savers came to the aid of fishermen involved in fishing boat related incidents.
