GST will be rolled out across India on July 1 and the fact that most dealers have already registered on the GST portal shows that the state administration is geared up for the new tax regime.
The term ‘dealers’ means businesses, which are required to pay one or more types of commercial taxes.
Dipak M Bandekar, commissioner of commercial taxes, said, “As of now, we have 26,000 dealers registered with commercial taxes department. Of that, as of June 10, 63% have already migrated to GST portal.”
Bandekar continued, “Of the remaining, who have not registered, 9,000 dealers have their annual turnover less than Rs 20 lakh, which means it is not mandatory for them to register on GST portal.”
This means that only 17,000 dealers under commercial taxes department are supposed to move on to the GST portal. Of that, 16,380 dealers have already registered on GST portal.
Bandekar further said, “There are few cases of PAN mismatch. These are typically cases wherein the name on the PAN card doesn’t exactly match with the name given while creating a login ID on GST portal. For such cases, we will create IDs on July 2, when GST will have already rolled out.”
Commercial taxes includes a vast array of taxes like value added tax (VAT), entertainment tax, luxury tax and tax on entry of goods. All these taxes will be subsumed by GST.
For migrating to GST network, dealers are not required to physically go to the commercial taxes office. The dealers are required to create a login ID and password on a website (www.gst.gov.in).
Different sets of documents are required for registering on GST portal for different categories of dealers. For example, in case of a proprietor, a PAN card, a lease agreement or an ownership document of shop, a photo and bank account details are required.
In addition to the documents above, in case of a partnership, a partnership deed is also required.
