MORJIM
Frustrated by all night loud music being played across Chapora river, villagers from Morjim have submitted a petition at the offices of the chief minister, the chief secretary and the director general of police.
People in Morjim are fed up with the nuisance caused by certain clubs which play loud music which starts at night and continues well into early morning in total violation of laws and even Supreme Court directions on noise pollution.
The petition read, “Clubs like Monkey Valley, Kolbassa and Teso announce all night parties through posters and even play music till 6 am in the morning”.
The villagers of Morjim had approached the police on a number of occasions but their attempts at getting any intervention in this matter proved futile. The petition continued, “In the last two months, collectively we have made hundreds of phone calls to local police stations, but unfortunately our efforts have not been able to stop this illegal playing of music all through the night”.
Such noise pollution not only affects humans but is also dangerous for ecology of a place like Morjim, which is a habitat for Ridley Turtles. Morjim is also famous as a variety of local and migratory species of birds flock around this place.
This is a pan-Goa problem. In the name of tourism development, clubs have mushroomed over the years and play loud music totally neglecting the comfort of locals. The police, more often than not, fails to act against the owners of such clubs.
The State government has time and again announced its intention of focusing on eco-tourism. But, when a place like Morjim offers opportunities for such a cause, it is being neglected. Having filed the petition, the villagers of Morjim are hoping that the State government will finally come to their rescue.
