Panic and confusion prevailed among many aspiring candidates over filing of nominations for the upcoming polls in Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), after the Supreme Court stayed the High Court’s verdict on ward reservations.
Several people were seen running from pillar to post and meeting their advocates to finalise their nomination forms, while others rushed to the Mormugao deputy collector’s office to ascertain if the previous schedule of elections remained active and if Thursday was the last day to file nominations for the MMC polls.
Dy Collector Sachin Desai is believed to have told the aspiring candidates that the previous election schedule was still in abeyance and that, a new circular was issued to him regarding the revised election schedule and filing of nominations.
"The Supreme Court stay on the High Court’s verdict prompted a lot of messages on social media, stating that the old notification order remains valid and Thursday would be the last day for filing of nominations. This cause panic and confusion,” said Aditya Yadav, who is aspiring to contest from Ward 17.
“When we went to meet authorities to file our nomination, I was informed there was no order from the state election commission. We want clarity from the government regarding the MMC elections," said Yadav.
