The theme ‘Burst Hunger not Crackers’ will be adopted by Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) as part of efforts to promote an environment-friendly Diwali.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Thursday informed reporters that the MMC had been successful in reducing single-use plastic during the recent Saptah while the council had also tried its best to celebrate an eco-friendly Ganesh festival by distributing 2,000 cloth bags and 3,000 paper bags as alternatives.
“Now, this council intends to continue with the plastic-free initiative during the upcoming Diwali festival. The theme for the Diwali will be “Burst Hunger not Crackers”.”
“This Council wants to go for an eco-friendly Diwali by introducing Earthen lamps, decorative Diyas and to use crackers which have specific labels ‘No child labour was employed in manufacturing these fireworks’.”
“This Council also intends to promote an eco-friendly coloured Rangoli without using any dyes and instead, promote natural organic colours, flower petals and dried leaves for Rangoli,” said Fernandes.
“We seek help from organisations and NGOs who can assist MMC to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali,” the MMC chief officer said.
Stating that the MMC would also launch a campaign ‘Carry your own cloth bag while shopping for Diwali’ in a big way, Fernandes said single-use plastic would be totally banned during Diwali festival.
“This Council wants plastic bags below 50 microns to disappear from Vasco,” Fernandes said.
