Mormugao civic body fines those dumping garbage in open spaces

In a new initiative, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has begun imposing fines on those people caught dumping garbage in open spaces in the municipality.

Acting on directions from MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar and MMC Chief Officer Jayant Tari, a team of municipal inspectors comprising Rajesh Sawant, Eknath Padwal, Fakirappa (Baburi) Harijan, Sagar Satardekar, Sanjay Mestri, Kumar Sherve, Sham Harijan and Shrikant Chalwadi on Friday imposed fines to those found dumping garbage in the open.

MMC sources said the fine imposed on violaters are Rs 200 at the initial stage, which could be further increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000, based upon the quantum and type of garbage.

The drive is expected to continue in all 25 wards of MMC, as part of efforts to stop garbage being dumped in open spaces.
