Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday carried out a drive against encroachments in the port town.
Several MMC workers loaded with gas cutters and other equipment dismantled sheds erected by the roadsides and even dismantled the extended roofs of some stalls in the fruit and vegetable market.
While MMC staff continued the drive, several vendors were upset over the drive as the roofs were being dismantled.
Vasco Vegetables Market Association Leader Prashant Naik told reporters that while the MMC could take up a drive against encroachments, they should refrain from dismantling roofs.
"We sell vegetables, fruits and these items are perishable. Removal of roofs will expose the products to sunlight and spoil it and cause losses to the poor vendors who are struggling amid the Covid pandemic.”
“The MMC can remove extended sheds if they want but must not dismantle the roofs," said Naik.
Another vendor said they were being harassed under the anti-encroachment drive and will now be forced to sell their products by sitting in the hot sun without a roof on their sheds.
