Fresh elections to elect a new Chairperson and Vice Chairperson to the Mormugao Municipal council (MMC) will be held on June 26. Speaking to media, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said that a Special meeting will be convened by Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) on at 11 am.
Fernandes said that the chief officer of Margao Municipal Council, Sidhivinayak Naik will be the presiding officer for the special meeting. After having successfully overturned an ouster in a no-confidence motion last month amid political struggles and legal disputes, former MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar and his deputy Shashikant Parab were voted out of office in a second no-confidence motion on June 13.
In what was considered as BJP defeating BJP at Vasco, Gaonkar and Parab backed by Urban Development Minister Milind Naik were voted out of power by 13 -11 votes in a show of hands voting by opposition panel of councillors backed by Vasco BJP MLA Carlos Almeida during a special meeting called to decide upon the no confidence motion at MMC moved against Gaonkar and Parab by 13 of the 25 MMC councillors. According to sources, MMC Councillor Nandadeep Raut will file for the post of the 51st Chairperson of the MMC.
