Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, who is known for his out-of-the-box thinking and innovative decisions has now set his eyes on ‘Pay Parking’ as a generation revenue option for the cash strapped municipal council.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borker on Tuesday afternoon conducted a joint inspection of roads in Vasco along with Traffic PI Shailesh Narvekar and other officials from the PWD and RTO departments to implement a pay parking system in Vasco.
Speaking to reporters, Borker said the decision may be opposed by a few people but will definitely instil discipline in Vasco and generate the much needed revenue for the MMC.
“Vasco is a very congested city and motorists struggle to find parking in the city. We have also noticed a long stretch of the parking used by the “Rent a Car” and “Rent a Bike” operators,” said Borker.
“We have now decided to start a pay parking system in Vasco. If pay parking can be successful in cities like Margao and Panaji, why not in Vasco? We plan to implement this system at the earliest, even before the month end so that we can start the New Year with a new initiative to instil discipline and generate revenue as well,” said Borker.
The MMC chairperson said the council has been contemplating pay parking for the last few months and even had a series of meetings with the traffic department and the RTO.
“A letter was then sent to South Goa Collector who has now asked us to carry an inspection to see the available place. We are trying to implement a few lanes in Vasco as pay parking for four-wheelers on a pilot basis and these lanes will be the lane opposite Vishwasurya shop till Rajani Store, lanes on the two sides of MMC Building (Post office side and Middle lane side),” said Borker.
“We will start with around three lanes on a trial basis and we will extend to the other lanes as well. We have also asked the Rent-a-Car and Rent-a-Bike operators to refrain from parking their vehicles across the lanes in Vasco. We have not yet decided on the rates as of now for the cars in the pay parking plan.”
