The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday demolished a shop that was illegally set up at the basement of a commercial building in Vasco using a JCB.
The shop structure with a shutter sprang up overnight on Sunday, shocking many shopkeepers of the building and the other residents in the port town.
While NGO Goa First convenor Parshuram Sonurlekar demanded an enquiry, photos of the shop with a shutter went viral on social media.
The MMC was quick enough to act and demolished the structure within 12 hours using a JCB and municipal workers at 9 am on Monday.
While it was unclear as to who had carried out the activity and who was trying to set up a structure overnight, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said illegality will not be tolerated in the municipality.
"I was shocked to see photos of the structure on social media. I called on shopkeepers of the building and they said the structure was not there when they closed their shops on Saturday night. They were shocked to see the structure when they saw their shops on Sunday morning," said Rodrigues.
Rodrigues said he later got in touch with many MMC workers and even councillors, but no one was aware about the structure or who it belonged to.
“I then got a call from Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar asking me about the structure. He then provided the MMC with a JCB and we used municipal workers to demolish the structure because we want to be extremely clear that illegalities won't be tolerated.”
“I want to warn everyone in advance that no matter who you are or what your political affiliation may be, the MMC will not tolerate illegalities and will initiate stringent action on culprits that are caught engaging in such tricks.”
“The MMC may be closed on Sunday but no one must take undue advantage of this fact to carry out illegalities in our jurisdiction," said Rodrigues.
