Emphasising the importance of CCTV cameras in the port town, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the council would write to South Goa MP Fransisco Sardinha or tie up with business houses in Vasco to install CCTV cameras under CSR funds.
"We know that most crimes are detected on CCTV footage and we have vital installations like oil tanks, ammonia storage tanks and institutions like the port and airport here. However, we have no CCTV surveillance at strategic locations, because all 52-odd CCTVs installed under MPLAD funds 10 years ago are not working,” said Rodrigues.
“We will soon take up the issue with South Goa MP Fransisco Sardinha or also try and restore the non-functional CCTV cameras under CSR funds from organisations, business houses and establishments in Vasco.”
He informed that around 52-odd CCTV cameras were installed at various locations in Vasco under Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) Scheme by then-MP Fransisco Sardinha in 2011.
“The project was initiated at a cost of around 50 lakhs then and the cameras worked fine for some time, but became non-functional soon. Today, Sardinha is back as the MP but the cameras he had taken up under MPLAD funds are non-functional," said Rodrigues.
"These 52 CCTV cameras were installed and placed on electric poles at important junctions in Vasco to keep a watch on criminal activities and also to help MMC to keep a watch on encroachment by vendors, but they have been defunct for over a long time now,” he added.
