Mormugao Municipal Councillor Nandadeep Raut has objected to the trucks carrying mud from a construction site in Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
Speaking to the media, Raut said a few people on Monday morning blocked a truck carrying mud from GSL without covering it and questioned the driver.
"People from the locality had approached me on several occasions to protest against the trucks carrying mud in the open," he said.
"For the past several months, the dust has been unbearable and dangerous. There have been several accidents after two-wheelers skidded over the fine mud particles. The pebbles in the mud carried by the trucks fall on roads, making it unsafe. A victim of a recent accident is still in hospital and we will not tolerate this anymore," warned Raut.
"Mud particles are seen in the air and often goes on the eyes of children going to schools near the church. A lot of people approached me and I have written to GSL to inform its vendor to take care while transporting the mud."
"I have called the vendor more than 40 times and now, people have resorted to blocking their trucks and I am in full support of the people," he added.
According to sources, GSL has appointed a vendor for the construction of an office building in its premises and the contractor involved carries the mud from the construction site to a dumping site near the church.
"Last week, people got together and damaged a truck. It's sad when vendors from outside the State don't care about local authorities and safety of citizens in the surrounding localities. The GSL should inform them that people of Goa are not to be taken lightly," he said.
"I have warned them that no truck should be found uncovered, failing which I will come on road with the public from my ward and we will not be responsible if any untoward incident takes place. I am here to solve people's issues and I really don't care about what they do with the mud as long as people from my ward are not affected," said Raut.
