The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday afternoon convened an awareness meeting on vector-borne diseases in observance of World Malaria Day, bringing together health officers, officials from various government departments, and councillors to discuss preventive measures and coordinated action.

The meeting focused on tackling diseases such as malaria and dengue with emphasis on timely intervention, public awareness, and maintaining sanitation across wards. Health officials briefed those present on the current situation, potential risk factors, and the importance of sustained vigilance, especially with the approaching monsoon season.

MMC Chairperson Girish Borker, addressing the gathering, stressed the need for continued cooperation between civic representatives and health authorities to ensure that preventive measures are effectively implemented on the ground.

He pointed out that while the present council’s tenure is likely to conclude by next month, public health responsibilities must remain uninterrupted.

Borker urged health officers and concerned departments to remain responsive to requests raised by councillors, even after their tenure ends, particularly in matters related to fumigation, fogging, and other vector-control activities. He said such coordination is crucial to prevent outbreaks and safeguard public health in residential areas.

During the meeting, officials highlighted the importance of identifying mosquito breeding sites, regular inspection of stagnant water sources, and prompt action on complaints received from the public. Councillors also shared feedback from their respective wards, raising concerns about vulnerable areas and the need for more frequent fumigation drives.

Health officers assured that necessary steps would be taken to intensify surveillance and preventive action, including awareness campaigns at the community level. They also called on citizens to play an active role by maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings and reporting potential breeding spots to authorities.

The meeting concluded with a collective resolve to strengthen coordination among departments and ensure that preventive measures are carried out efficiently across the municipality, particularly in the coming weeks when conditions become more favourable for the spread of vector-borne diseases.
