In a joint operation, the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) and Indian Coast Guard on Friday sent relief material to victims affected in the Chennai floods.
MPT dispatched mineral water, cookies, milk, blankets and other items to the flood-affected victims. The material, dispatched through the Coast Guard ship from Mormugao Port, will be further loaded on Indian Coast Guard Ship 'Samudra Prahari' at mid sea and taken for distribution to the victims in Chennai.
Speaking to The Goan, Coast Guard PRO Commander Akshay Jain said the Indian Coast Guard Eastern Region is carrying relief operations and to augment the efforts, two Indian Coast Guard ships 'ICGS Samrat' and 'Samudra Prahari' are sailing from Mumbai with helicopters, divers, doctors, medicines and other food material.
“The 'ICGS Samudra Prahari', which is on its way to Chennai, has been requested to anchor at mid-sea to load relief materials sent by MPT,” he said.
MPT Chairman Jaykumar told The Goan that it was a small effort to help the flood-affected victims.
“From our side, we are sending mineral water, cookies, milk, blankets and medicines. Though this is not sufficient, we want to help the victims who are struggling to survive,” said Jaykumar.
“We have taken the help of the Coast Guard and the material loaded in their ship at the port will be loaded on the awaiting Coast Guard ship at mid-sea and from there it will be dispatched to Chennai,” added Jaykumar.
