MPT Chairman I Jeyakumar said that as a part of a long-term prospective, Mormugao Port Trust would develop a refinery-based port in South Maharashtra.

Speaking to reporters in the port town, Jeyakumar also said that he felt the mining activities would take around 2 years to resume and that the coal terminal in MPT were amongst the best across various ports in the country, but the people had felt otherwise.

Jeyakumar also said the port had a history of 130 years and would not close down and MPT had decided to opt for alternate cargo like granite and sand amongst a few. “In a long-term perspective we are developing a refinery-based port in Southern Maharashtra along with Maharashtra Maritime board, JNPT and Mumbai Port. The Ministry has also informed us to plan for more cruise berths and that master plan are also being activated,” said Jeyakumar.

“I feel the mining will resume in 2 to 3 years from now. We are already deciding to opt for alternate cargo like granite and probably sand. We are also looking forward to an increased cruise tourism business besides having container cargo. We have also started to explore other cargo to be handled by this port,” said Jeyakumar.

Speaking on the closure of the port, Jeyakumar said the port was having a history of 130 years and also being a government organisation had it’s own resilence. He also said the coal terminals in the port were amongst the best across all Indian ports.
