“We want the government should take up the matter before the assembly elections are declared. They should convene a special assembly session for it,” MRS president G R Dhavalikar demanded.
MRS convened a meeting of its members in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad hall at Ponda on Sunday. The MRS members were venting anger against the government for not fulfilling their demand.
Dhavalikar, Ashok Naik, Rajaram Jog, Madhusudan Desai, Anuradha Moghe, Mashindra Chari and Mohan Dicholkar were among those present. It may be recalled that the Goa assembly in August passed a resolution seeking official language status for Marathi, but Konkani lovers opposed it and even Congress said that official language issue was resolved years back.
MLA Naresh Sawal had moved a private member’s resolution seeking official language status to Marathi. But Panaji BJP MLA Siddharth Kuncolienkar suggested amendment of the resolution to consider public consultation before turning it into act.
Speaking to The Goan, Dhavalikar said BJP should convene a special session before elections are announced and should pass the bill. “If it failed to give officials status to Marathi, then we will work against the BJP,” he warned.
According to Dhavalikar, once Marathi gets official language status, then both Konkani and Marathi will flourish simultaneously. They also called upon BJP State President Vinay Tendulkar at his house and demanded to request his party to convene a special assembly session.
