A murder accused, Vinayak Korbatkar, was killed in a clash between two groups of jail inmates at Sada Sub Jail Mormugao late Tuesday night.
The inmates of Sada Sub Jail went berserk and damaged computers, server, CCTVs, windows, jailor's office, other electrical appliances and other office equipments at about 10.30 pm.
According to sources at Sada Sub Jail, the undertrials at Sada Sub Jail were not happy with the notorious gangster Korbatkar, who was lodged at the jail.
“After committing the murder of Asphak Bhengre, Korbatkar was lodged at Sada Sub Jail for the last six months. However, the other inmates at the jail were not happy with his behaviour,” said the source.
“On Tuesday at about 2 pm, Korbatkar was taken to the Session’s Court at Mapusa and as Korbatkar was also involved in a murder at Nasik, permission was sought form the court to issue transfer order to present him before the Principal District and Sessions Judge of Oras-Maharashtra and to obtain further order to lodge Korbatkar at the Oras jail.”
“Since the Principal District and Sessions Judge declined to pass the order to lodge Korbatkar in Oras Jail, Korbatkar was brought back to Sada jail at about 10.30 pm. Korbatkar started misbehaving with the officers at the jail and demanded the jail guard to open the door of Cell 13 and as the jail guard failed to open the door of the cell, Korbatkar directed the inmates of the cell to break open the door and come out,” informed the source.
The source added that once out of the cell, the inmates of the cell went berserk and started damaging the jail property. “They also forcefully opened the door of Cell 15 and when the inmates of the cell came out, there was a tussle between the inmates of Cell 13 and 15,” said the source.
During the tussle, a jailor Vithal Gawas was injured and was rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
Later, both the groups assaulted each other with iron rods, sticks and whatever they could lay their hands on and during the assault, Korbatkar was also assaulted and he succumbed to injuries.
“Korbatkar was declared dead on arrival by the doctor at Chicalim Cottage Hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday,” added the source.
The source said during the clash, about 10 other inmates also sustained injuries and nine were discharged after administering medical treatment at Chicalim Cottage Hospital, while one was undergoing medical treatment at GMC Hospital in Bambolim.

IG Prisons to probe
IG Prisons Siddi Vinayak Naik will conduct the inquiry into the incident that took place at Sada Sub Jail on Tuesday night.
Speaking to media persons, Naik who visited the jail to take stock of the situation on Wednesday morning said he was informed that there was a clash between two groups at Sada Sub jail on Tuesday night.
“During the clash, one jailor was injured with a sharp weapon and the inmates damaged all the electrical appliances including the server, TV, computers, laptops, CCTVs, jailor's doors, tables, tube lights and whatever they could lay their hands on.”
