The activists led by Goans for Goa convenor Kennedy Afonso and Musical Warriors leader Sudeep Dalvi made their presence felt at the market and belted Konkani songs in a bid to draw the attention of the government and the authorities to the stench and filth around the market.
Kennedy Afonso later told the media that the NGOs had given a month’s ultimatum for the government to act in regard to the wholesale fish market, but in vain. He, however, said that the activists are happy that TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai visited the market on Saturday and announced plans to hot mix the wholesale market road and to tar the entire market premises. “We want to make clear that the activists and people are neither against Vijai Sardesai nor the government. On the contrary, we would like to welcome Sardesai’s promise to bring around a turn around in the market in the shortest possible time,” Afonso told the media.
He pointed that the NGOs will hold the protest on the 30th of every month, even as he hoped that the TCP Minister and the government would honour the promises and bring a turn around in the market.
Activist Fatima Rebello said that the once lush green area which today plays host to the wholesale fish market resembles stink and filth, while demanding that the authorities restore the pristine glory of the area. She hoped that people of Margao and outside play their due role and ensure that the authorities keep the area clean and hygienic.
A villager from Seraulim Benjamin Fernandes told the media that Seraulim villagers had been the worst sufferers over the years. “Leave alone the stench and filth pervading around, Seraulim villagers have to face traffic bottlenecks on the wholesale market road and accidents have been the order of the day,” he said.
