CANACONA: The Loliem-Polem panchayat on Saturday passed a unanimous resolution to name the new Galgibaga and Talpona bridges after former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar.
The resolution was passed during the monthly meeting of Loliem-Polem panchayat body, which was chaired by Sarpanch Ajay (Ajit) Lolienkar and attended by all members.
The resolution was proposed by Nishant Prabhugaonkar and quickly seconded by Lolienkar, and simultaneously endorsed by Dy Sarpanch Jessica Corte and all other panchas, including ex-sarpanch, Bhushan Prabhugaonkar.
The panchayat has decided to forward its resolution to the government, requesting to name the Galgibaga and Talpona bridges after late Parrikar.
Incidentally, the Talpona bridge falls in the jurisdiction of Poinguinim panchayat and the Canacona Municipal Council. Sources said a similar resolution is being proposed by the Poinguinim panchayat.
“Late Parrikar's commitment and contribution to the people of Canacona, and to Goa at large, cannot be questioned. It will be a worthy tribute to this visionary leader for leading the state towards unmatched development,” Sarpanch Lolienkar said.
“The panchayat resolution will be submitted to the government requesting to name the Galgibaga and Talpona bridges after Parrikar, when the 4-lane highway section between Char-Rasta and Maxem will be inaugurated by July 21,” he added.
The panchayat members also recollected how the demand of Lolienkars for the bridges had been pending since Liberation and it was Manohar Parrikar during his tenure as the country's defence minister who got the bridges approved.
In an interesting development, Lolienkar informed that as mutually agreed, he would step down as sarpanch on June 19 to make way for Panch Shailesh Pagui to succeed him.
The Loliem-Polem panchayat has also decided to invite teachers of village schools and handover books and stationery, which the panchayat annually sponsors, during the 18th June function in the panchayat.
“The teachers than will handover the books and stationery to deserving students,” informed Lolienkar.
