The Mapusa Municipal Council has unanimously decided to hand over the old municipal building to the Department of Art and Culture free of rent to set up a district library.
The council in its ordinary meeting on Friday also decided to allot an alternative place to the Red Cross Society, whose office is housed in one part of the building.
Councillor Rajsingh Rane said the proposal had been hanging for a long time and therefore suggested that the premises be handed over to the Art and Culture department, which will also take care of the dilapidated building.
In another major decision, the council also decided to utilize funds of Rs 1.85 crore received form 14th Finance Commission to widen and beautify the road from Gandhi Chowk up to the nullah near the Shree Bodgeshwar Devasthan at Mapusa’s border.
Senior councillor Sandip Falari suggested that besides widening and resurfacing of the road, construction of footpath and beautification should also be taken up in the same plan.
To a question from a councillor, MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza informed that the council had already taken a resolution earlier to shift the kiosks opposite the Carvalho petrol pump.
The council has also given a green signal to the proposal of Indian Medical Association (IMA) to treat bio-medical waste in the city.
IMA had sent a proposal to the council requesting for land of around 80 square metres with construction of pits to treat the bio-medical waste. The IMA also offered to pay Rs 6,000 per month to the council. The council resolved to allot the required space to the IMA and get the pits constructed through CSR activity.
The council also decided to ask IMA to cough up Rs 12,000 per month instead of their proposal to offer Rs 6,000.
The IMA will appoint a recognized agency to treat the bio-medical waste in the city.
MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza informed the council that a plan to develop Mapusa garage has been passed and work order has been issued for Rs 20 crore to develop it into a commercial complex.
The council resolved to accommodate the lessees/legal heirs from the area in the same complex to avoid further delay in the project.
