Firefighters at work to clear the tree which fell on two vehicles at Dando-Sanguem.

SANGUEM:

Occupants in a car had a narrow escape when a large tree fell on two vehicles across the main road at Dando-Sanguem on Thursday, following heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds.

The two vehicles damaged had been parked by the roadside. However, no injuries were reported in the incident.

According to reports, the occupants of one car had finished tea at a nearby hotel and sat in the car and the driver was about to reverse the vehicle when the tree came crashing down on the rear of their vehicle.

The incident took place right in front of a police team stationed at the Dando Junction to issue challans for violators of traffic rules.

Incidentally, the tree had been identified and numbered by authorities to be cut down over a year ago, considering its dangerous position, but it had escaped the attention of authorities.

The fallen tree was later cut and cleared by fire brigade personnel. Locals led by Councillors Queiroz Cruz and Meshu D’Costa also assisted in getting the road cleared.
