Navelim farmers and citizens saw red as officials of the Water Resources Department descended near the Kudchadkar storm water nullah for an inspection.
Suspecting that the WRD officials have made their presence at the site for an inspection for a road construction, the farmers and citizens from Navelim made it amply clear that they are opposed to any road construction through the fields.
In fact, the petitioner in the High Court PIL in respect of Salpem lake water contamination, Prof Antonio Alvares warned the WRD officials that he would draw attention of the High Court if any attempt is being made to build a road through the fields of Salpem lake.
The WRD officials maintained that they have come to the site since the property in question belongs to the department.
Prof Alvares later told the media that the farmers of Navelim are vehemently opposed to the construction of any road through the fields of Salpem lake. “Farmers of Navelim cultivating the fields in the Salpem lake have revived paddy cultivation after a gap of 30 years. Now, we have been told that a road has been proposed through the fields by politicians. We would like to warn that the farmers will not allow any road construction through their fields,” Alvares warned.
