NCP questions ‘charges’ on exorbitant water bills

NCP questions ‘charges’ on exorbitant water bills

MAPUSA
Stating that people were getting exorbitant water bills, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday demanded that the PWD should come out with proper explanation on imposition of inspection charges and meter rent.

NCP General Secretary, Sanjay Barde said a consumer was entitled to get inspection charges only if he had filed a complaint to the department and the PWD’s official comes to inspect the water meter.

Similarly, he said consumers who have purchased their own water meters have been charged meter rent.

“Lakhs of people have received exorbitant water bills this month with inspection charges. The PWD should give us valid reasons for imposing the inspection charges and meter rents,” Barde said.

The NCP general secretary along with aggrieved people presented a memorandum to the Assistant Engineer, PWD, Mapusa, Mahesh Kenaudikar.

Continuing, Barde said the government had recently announced 16,000 litres of water free to people of Goa but wondered how joint families will benefit from this scheme.

“Joint families have only one water connection in their houses. Can they survive with 16,000 litres of water?” he questioned.

The PWD AE informed that the charges on bills have been imposed as per the government notifications which are issued from time to time.

“If at all there are any discrepancies in the bills then consumers are free to come to the office and we can find out if there are errors while issuing the bills,” Kenaudikar said.
