MARGAO
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Thursday said the NCP will contest the March 2020 election for the Zilla Panchayats.
The Benualim MLA made the announcement at the birthday celebrations hosted by him at his Varca office to celebrate the 79th birthday of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar on Thursday. “If the Congress has decided to contest the ZP elections on the party banner, the NCP will not lag behind. The NCP will field candidates in the ZP elections,” he said, while saying that the party will shortlist candidates to contest in the coming polls.
Terming Sharad Pawar as one leader, who is being respected all across the country, Churchill said he has proved that the people are behind him and has showed his place in the political scheme of things. “Sharad Pawar is a leader of the masses and he has proved once again in the recently held Maharashtra Assembly election. He was with the Congress party, but had move out to join the NCP after he was denied the opportunities to move ahead in politics,” he said, adding that he too had quit the Congress party and formed the regional parties to espouse the cause of Goans.
Recalling how then AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh had suggested to him to join the Goa Forward party in the run up to the 2017 Assembly election, Churchill said he preferred to join the NCP after telling Digvijay Singh that the Goa Forward is a new party floated by a person, who was once upon a time his worker.
“Digvijay and others tried to defeat me in the 2017 election but the people of Benaulim gave them a befitting reply
by returning me to the Assembly with a huge margin,” Churchill said.
