M Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, inaugurated the 4th National Conference on Polar Sciences (NCPS) at the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Vasco, on Wednesday. The three-day meet has brought together leading scientists, academicians and researchers from India and abroad to discuss challenges and opportunities in polar and ocean sciences.
The inaugural session was attended by SCAR President Gary Wilson, NIO Director Sunil Singh, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, senior MoES officials, and scientists from across the country. Ravichandran stressed the need to strengthen India’s polar research capacity through new research vessels, advanced observation systems and training programmes. He said these would drive innovation and support the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. The dignitaries released the NCPS abstract book and the Arctic Expedition Report 2024–25.
SCAR chief Wilson, delivering the plenary talk, warned of rapid Antarctic warming and urged effective science communication for policymaking. A Young Polar Scientist Meet with 160 participants preceded the conference.
