MARGAO

Hit by acute problem of low voltage in many areas of Navelim, Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro on Monday demanded that the Power department should not release power to the mega housing projects coming up in the village till the power situation improves and the existing power consumers receive good quality power

supply.

The Navelim MLA also demanded that the Power department put up a mechanism to repair the non-functioning street lights in the village, even as he promised to raise the issue in the ensuing session of the Goa Legislative Assembly.

Faleiro had called a joint meeting at Navelim with Power and Panchayat officials and villagers on Monday to review the power situation in the village with consumers complaining of power outages and fluctuating voltage in recent

days.

“Instead of improving the power situation, it has gone from bad to worse after the commissioning of a new transformer. The people of Navelim are suffering very badly on account of low voltage. Voltage fluctuation is literally the order of the

day.  The less said of the street light the better, with the regulators not functioning with the street lights often found switched on during the day and off during the nights,” Faleiro said.

He also demanded to know how come the street lights have failed to function when the contractors had given a 10-year guarantee to maintain the lights.

Saying that he is grateful to Power Minister Nilesh Cabral for taking note of the hardships faced by the people of Navelim constituency, Faleiro wondered why people are not getting adequate power supply when there’s a power transformer in place to take care of the requirements of the villagers.

Asserting that providing power to the existing consumers ought to be the priority of the department, Faleiro said the mega housing projects should not be supplied power till the needs of the existing consumers

is fully met.
