Newly elected Belagavi BJP MP Mangala Angadi, who won the Belagavi Lok Sabha by-polls on Sunday, said she would follow her late husband’s dreams of enhancing ties and connectivity between Belgaum and Goa

Mangala, wife of former Belagavi MP and MoS for Railways late Suresh Angadi, won with a slender margin of 5,240 votes. She also happens to be the first woman MP from Belagavi Lok Sabha Constituency.

Angadi secured 4,40,327 votes, while Satish Jarkiholi of Congress secured 4,35,087 votes and Shubham Shelke of MES secured 1,24,642 votes.

“Apart from taking up overall development works in the region, I will also follow up the rail and road connectivity between Belagavi and Goa,” Angadi told The Goan after winning the elections.

It may be recalled that bye elections to the Belgaum Lok Sabha constituency were held on April 17 as the seat was vacant due to the untimely demise of former MoS Railways Suresh Angadi in September last year.

After assuming charge as the MoS for Railways, late Angadi -- who was elected for the fourth consecutive term -- had taken up overall development of railways network especially in Belagavi and north Karnataka region.

The double tracking and electrification work on the Miraj-Vasco and Hubballi-Vasco railway line had accelerated during his tenure of about 16 months.

Apart from commencing a stop of Dudhsagar Railway Station in view of promoting tourism in Goa, he had also flagged off the Belagavi-Vasco passenger train, which came to a halt after the outbreak of Covid pandemic last year.
