Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday inaugurated the newly completed floating jetty near Captain of Ports jetty at Panaji with floating concrete pontoons which are 72 metres long and 3 metres wide.
Others present at the function included Union Ayush Minister Shripad Naik, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Tendulkar, Secretary (Ministry of Shipping) Gopal Krishna, Ports Minister Michael Lobo, DG Shipping Amitabh Kumar and MPT Chairman Dr E Ramesh Kumar.
In his address, Sawant lauded the efforts of the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), Indian Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Captain of Ports who had contributed towards the completion of the one-of-its-kind floating jetty in Goa, which would boost the tourism industry through inland navigation.
Mandaviya also congratulated all stakeholders for initiating a new era in Goa by constructing the floating jetty. He also said the central government would support such projects by financial aid through the IWAI for the benefit of the Goa.
Dr Ramesh Kumar expressed his satisfaction over their contribution towards the project and said the MPT would strive for the all round development of Goa.
The MPT along with Indian Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the State government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 3, 2018, valid for five years, whereby the MPT, IWAI and the Captain of Ports are required to collaborate within the frame work of MoU signed for development of the recently declared national waterways in Goa. Under the MoU, the MPT has to execute the works as Project Management Consultancy (PMC) on behalf of IWAI. Currently, the Captain of Ports need four floating jetties, three in Mandovi river and one in Chapora river and also need to upgrade their navigation aid system, including induction of new navigation aids.
As part of this project,
the MPT planned and completed the first floating jetty near the Captain of Ports jetty in Panaji.
