MAPUSA
Sending a clear message to vendors in the market, the new chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council Ryan Braganza on Wednesday said he would not hesitate to take tough decisions to instill discipline in the Mapusa market.
He also said that his top priority would be to create parking slots in the city to ensure smooth traffic flow.
“Wait for a few days. You will see changes taking place in the market,” Braganza said to a query on vendors spilling on to the open space in fish and vegetable market.
“I can assure toughness in our approach to bring discipline in the market this time,” he added.
Acknowledging of the acute parking problem, he said efforts would be made to find parking slots at various places in the city. “We will identify parking slots from the space that is available to us. There a lot of old and unused vehicles parked at various places in the city. Those vehicles will be removed to create space. Any open space that is available will be converted into parking slots,” Braganza said.
He said the talk about whether development has taken place or not in Mapusa was a debatable issue and people have different opinions on it.
He said there was an opinion in the section of the people that infrastructure works were not seen inside the city.
“For that, we need to initiate works on the new bus-stand. We need to resolve parking issues…,” he said.
Thanking all his colleagues, the local MLA and the chief minister, the chairperson said that the chair that he will sit on also belongs to the people of Mapusa. “I believe this chair (the chairperson’s seat) belongs to all the people of Mapusa. We are open to suggestions from the people of Mapusa. We want your ideas and plans to make this city a better place,” he said.
Harping on the unity of the council, he said the fact that only one nomination was filed for the post of chairperson indicated that the council worked as a team. “I may have some new ideas and will try to implement it. But that does not mean I will abandon the decisions of my predecessors. Those works will continue and new proposals will also take shape simultaneously,” he said.
Earlier, the Presiding Officer, Vivek Naik declared Ryan Braganza as elected unopposed chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, as there was only one nomination for the post.
