Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar has announced that the State government has greenlit the construction of a 250-metre-long ramp to address long-standing issues faced by traditional fishermen in Morjim.
Speaking after a meeting with the fisherfolk at Vitthaldas Wada in the presence of officials from the fisheries and tourism departments, Arolkar stated that promises made by leaders to the fishermen during election season often go unfulfilled, leaving their demands unaddressed. However, following discussions with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, steps are now being taken to resolve the issues faced by the community with the government's support.
The MLA said a 250-metre-long ramp would be built for the fisher folk with five rooms to keep their equipment. A joint meeting will be held with the officials of the fisheries department and tourism department and process and work will start in the next six months, stated Arolkar.
As the land comes under the jurisdiction of the tourism department, a No Objection Certificate would be obtained from the department and also from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority for the construction of the 250-metre-long ramp. It will have independent space for four boats each.
The MLA also pointed out that the traditional footways which are inaccessible for tourists, would also be opened. Steps would also be constructed to come down from the ramp, he added. The tourism department has given a nod to this project, and the process of constructing the ramp will be completed within the next six months, the MLA stated.
